GR Yaris: Insights from Quick Shifter(Part5)

On this page, I, Rikutsu-Kone-Taro, would like to introduce the negatives of installing a quick shifter on the GR Yaris that I have noticed so far.

The progress of the quick shifter installation can be referred to by clicking part1, part2, part3, part4 respectively. (I recently added part6.)

It’s been almost a year since I introduced the quick shifter to my beloved GR Yaris RZHP (as of April 2022).

Now, the only negative aspect of installing the quick shifter is as follows.

That is, at the moment when my left hand touches the shift knob,as viechles go left side in Japan, to change gears, I sometimes can’t judge what gear I am currently in from the position of the shift knob, causing my brain to glitch. (Author’s note: This issue seems to be partially overcome. For details, please refer to part6)

When it glitches, the glitch sometimes extends to the point of “Huh, am I supposed to downshift or upshift?”

There are people in the world who always know whether they are running at what gear by sensation or memory.

However, I am not such a talented type, so I think about how to move my arm in an H pattern from the current shift position at that time.

By the way, in the case of motorcycles, if you want to shift down, you just need to lower the shift lever, and vice versa, so I have never felt particularly problematic even if I didn’t know what gear I was in at the moment.

So, in the case of motorcycles, you don’t need to worry about the current shift position, but you may wonder whether to reduce the number of gears by one or two.

Even if you shift down two gears from 4th gear, it is still 2nd gear, but if you do the same from 3rd gear, it becomes 1st gear, which may cause the rear tire to lock and result in a fall.

Therefore, in the case of motorcycles, deceleration is mainly done by braking, and shifting down is done only once for the purpose of matching the engine speed. So it feels like a leisurely ride.

In cars, even if you don’t fall over, excessive downshifting may cause the engine speed to rise too much and something may break.

So, Rikutsu-Kone-Taro wants to know what gear he is in before shifting down.

By the way, I have seen models of motorcycles with a shift position indicator (a grateful device that indicates what gear the current gear is in), but I wonder if there is no aftermarket part for cars? (Author’s note: I’m sorry for the repetition, but click here.)

Well, anyway, in an H-pattern MT, if the stroke is shortened, people like me who are slow types may sometimes glitch out… that was the main point of this time.

That’s all for this time.

Postscript: The GR Yaris after the 2024 minor change has a gear position indicator implemented. For details, click here.
